New Pathways of Ozone Formation:
The Ozone Isotope Effect and Oxygen Atom Recombination at Reactor Walls

The unusual isotope effect in the three-body formation reaction of ozone is an interesting tracer for chemical processes in the atmosphere. We have investigated the disappearance of the anomalously high oxygen isotope enrichments in low-pressure oxygen discharges. The (first) quantitative analysis confirms the existence of an often-neglected ozone formation pathway on surfaces.
The talk will discuss both on our knowledge of the unusual isotope composition of ozone and on the identification of the surface reaction that might be the dominant oxygen atom removal reaction in low-pressure discharges and that might also play a role in ozone formation on solar system icy satellites.
