Uwe CZARNETZKI (Prof, Ruhr University Bochum) - Nanosecond Pulsed Atmospheric Pressure Discharges

Atmospheric pressure plasma jets are presently intensively investigated for a wide range of applications ranging from treatment of cells, bacteria or sperms to conversion of certain chemicals in the gas the phase, e.g. CO2. The formation of highly vibrationally excited molecules in the discharge is essential and many of these applications. A wide variety of plasma generation concepts is in common use, e.g. RF or microwave. A very special form are ns-pulsed discharges. These discharges are characterized by a very short breakdown phase of the order of one ns, which is followed by a much longer DC like phase, which can last, depending on the length of the voltage pulse, typically between 10 ns and 1 us. Besides current and voltage, the electric field in the discharge, the vibrational/rotational distribution function, and the gas temperature are of particular interest. CARS and EFISH laser diagnostics are applied to measure these quantities in nitrogen discharges. The talk will introduce the characteristic features of the discharge and the laser diagnostics. The basic physical processes will be discussed by comparison between the experimental results and a kinetic model. Finally, an outlook on the application to CO2 will be given.
