Sustainable improvement of seeds vigor using dry atmospheric plasma priming

Seeds marketed to individuals and farmers are subjected to pretreatments aimed at improving biological parameters, in particular their median germination time and agricultural yield. These so-called priming techniques are essentially based on wet processes. In addition to their sequencing in several stages (wetting, drying, etc.), these processes take place over several days and require skilled labor. In our article, we explain how cold plasmas constitute a simple and innovative alternative : first by improving the vigor of the seeds and second by inducing persistent or even irreversible biological effects. Our working hypothesis is that cold plasma treatments contribute to the grafting of long-lived oxygenated species on the seed coat but also to their diffusion towards deeper layers ; thus improving the wettability and imbibition properties.

This work was the subject of interdisciplinary joint research carried out by T. Dufour (a-Pr. At the LPP) and C. Bailly (Pr. At the IBPS) as part of the master’s internship of Q. Gutierrez. Today, the dynamics in "plasma assisted agriculture" is ensured by J. August within his doctoral project at IBPS/LPP.
