Signature of a convention between Ecole Polytechnique and SATT Paris-Saclay to support the project MINIATURE

Researchers at LPP have for many years worked on the fundamental aspects of electric propulsion. The last few years they became interested in the possibility of miniaturizing and improving classical plasma based electric thrusters. They found solutions to make ion thrusters simpler by combining the classical technologies with methods and know-how from other fields of plasmas physics.

Miniaturization of engines is important in the new space revolution where satellites are becoming smaller, yet capable of performing interesting missions in particular when used in large constellations. Small satellites are the future of Big Data, the Internet to everyone and everywhere and the global intelligence related to economical, environmental and humanitarian activities. A key in this space revolution is the access to miniaturized propulsion systems to allow a full control of the small satellite orbits, allowing to increase their utility, their time of operation and to control their debris.

The development of the new miniaturized ion thruster started by a fundamental research project that was funded by a Marie-Curie fellowship and followed up by a pre-maturation phase funded by the Fédération de Coopération Scientifique de Paris-Saclay. The MINIATURE project is now accelerated by a strong support of SATT Paris-Saclay. The convention between Ecole Polytechnique and SATT Paris-Saclay was signed by J. Biot, the president of Ecole Polytechnique and X. Apolinarski, president of Satt Paris-Saclay during a ceremony at the Ecole Polytechnique the 14th of October 2016. This convention will allow the new startup to produce and test their new product in spatial configuration.
