On October 1, 2021, Renaud Ferrand defended his PhD "Multi-scale compressible turbulence in astrophysical plasmas viewed through theoretical, numerical and observational methods" (ED A&A 127, IP Paris) under the supervision of Fouad Sahraoui and Sébastien Galtier, researchers at LPP.

Abstract :
The solar wind is a turbulent plasma originating from the Sun and whose physics has been extensively studied for years. Understanding the mechanisms of turbulence energy dissipation is a key step in unraveling the mysteries of the solar wind.

In this thesis we obtain new ‘’exact laws’’, equations allowing for the calculation of the amount of energy exchanged by turbulence at a given scale. We develop a program able to compute these laws on simulated data, and apply it to a variety of plasma numerical simulations (Hall MHD and Landau-fluid). This work allows us to better understand the behavior of the laws and to obtain important results on the link between the (fluid) turbulent cascade and kinetic dissipation in the solar wind and on the behavior of the interstellar medium.

Applying exact laws on MMS NASA mission led to the first estimates of the energy cascade rate at sub-ionic scales, and highlighted the limitations of "curlometer"-like methods in the calculation of spatial gradients from multi-spacecraft data.
