Le 3 décembre 2021, Olivier Le Contel defended his Habilitation to conduct researches (HDR : Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches) "Kinetic and fluid processes in collisionless plasmas of the solar system".

Abstract

For the defense of my ("mémoire d’Habilitation à Diriger les Recherches – HDR)", I will present some results obtained after my PhD. They are mainly focused on sudden magnetic reconfiguration of the Earth’s magnetosphere, the so-called magnetospheric substorms as well as on fast flows or plasma jets which can be linked to substorms or occur as isolated events. These results were notably obtained in the framework of my responsibility for the magnetic antennas of the multi-satellite NASA missions THEMIS and MMS. I will also describe my short and medium term research perspectives which are related to the study of plasma jets, magnetic reconnection, plasma turbulence, shocks in synergy with the analysis of data from terrestrial multi-satellite missions (Cluster, THEMIS and MMS), from missions evolving in the solar wind (Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe) and from those that will evolve in the planetary magnetospheres of Jupiter (JUICE) and Mercury (BepiColombo). Finally, I will present my current involvement in the phase A of the project of constellation Helioswarm (9 satellites) for studying the plasma turbulence proposed in the framework of the NASA MIDEX call 2019.
