Title : Ultra-intense X-rays in PW laser plasma - generation, transport and application tostudy radiation dominated and warm dense matter.
Abstract : In experiments with pico- and femtosecond optical laser pulses of relativistic intensities exceeding 102 1 W/cm2 the laser energy is efficiently converted to X-ray radiation, which is emitted by hot electron component in collisionless processes. In turn, the intense X-ray radiation effectively ionizes the matter inside out, providing a large population of exotic states called hollow ions, and opens the way to study the matter in Radiation Dominated Regime. As well, together with fast electron flow, the radiation heats up the vicinity of the focal spot and deep-lying layers of the target to Warm Dense Matter states.
In this context, the following recent experimental studies on intense X-ray generation and consecutive phenomena in relativistic laser plasma of solid targets are overviewed :
– Non-linear growth of X-ray yield while optical field intensity ranges from 101 9 to 102 2 W/cm2 , and spectroscopy studies on X-ray emission from deeply-charged high-Z ions ;
– Observation of KK-hollow and high-n-hollow atoms, and the matter in Radiation Dominated Kinetics Regime in picoseconds PW laser plasma ;
– Transport of laser-generated X-rays through inner-lying target layers, and WDM temperature measurements by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy
Speaker : Dr. Sergey A. Pikuz. Head of the Laboratory for diagnostics of matter under extreme conditions at Joint Institute for High Temperatures RAS, Moscow. Associate professor at National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Moscow.
About the speaker : Sergey leads the Laboratory for diagnostics of matter under extreme conditions in the Joint Institute for High Temperatures RAS. Being recognized experts in X-ray diagnostics and experimental plasma physics with high power lasers they actively collaborate with groups from France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK, USA, Israel, China on various topics of high energy density physics starting from laboratory astrophysics and ICF to practical application of laser-plasma-based sources of ionizing radiation. Regularly they propose, take part and contribute to tens of experiments every year - at large-scale user facilities including XFEL SACLA, Vulcan PW, Phelix, J-KAREN-P, Vega PW, LULI2000, European XFEL, PEARL etc.
In parallel, Sergey has the position of associate professor at National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Moscow, and Visiting professor at Ecole Polytechnique (France). He is an active member of the scientific community, being the member of Proposal Review Panel at European XFEL (Germany), Representative of JIHT RAS at European Task Force for Laboratory Astrophysics (ETFLA), the member of Scientific-Coordination Council for Low-Temperature Plasma at Russian Academy of Sciences, Expert board member for the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia, the member of Task Force Committee for Russian research program at European XFEL. He coauthored 100+ peer-reviewed publications and his is achievements were valued by Moscow Government Award for outstanding young scientists in 2014.
