Résumé  :
In this talk,I will discuss new perspectives on the dynamics of Edge
Localized Modes (ELM) in tokamaks.ELMs are localized ,intense "
mini-disruptions" of the edge of H-mode plasmas,and are of great
interest and concern to magnetic fusion research, due to the transient
heat loads they produce on plasma facing components.ELMs are related
to linear peeling ( surface kink)-ballooning instabilities but actually
are strongly nonlinear bursts evolving from those.I will discuss
some new perspectives on the dynamics of ELMs.These include :

  • the nonlinear criteria for ELM bursts and its implications for the
    effective stability boundary for ELM phenomena
  • the crucial role of flux driven transport processes in ELM
    dynamics.This will be illustrated by an instructive sandpile
    model,which is
    also useful in the study of ELM mitigation schemes.
  • the micro physics of hyper-resistivity ,its origins,and its
    implications for relaxation rates.

The emphasis throughout will be on basic physics,not device specific
phenomenology.
