Emilia Kilpua (Université d’Helsinki) - Sheath regions of coronal mass ejections ; internal structure and solar wind – magnetosphere coupling

Abstract :
The sheath regions preceding fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are interesting structures both in terms of fundamental plasma physical processes and their importance for space weather at Earth. Turbulent sheaths consist of compressed and heated solar wind plasma that is accreted gradually as the CME travels through interplanetary space. They have a complex internal structure and are populated by various plasma waves and instabilities. In this presentation I will give an overview of sheaths and discuss in particular their fine-scale structures, including mirror mode and ion acoustic waves, and sheath turbulent properties. I will also discuss the key characteristics of sheaths that allow them to couple such effectively with the Earth’s magnetosphere.
