Julian Kashdan (IFPEN) - Optical diagnostics for engine combustion research

Résumé  :
Continued reductions in engine pollutant and CO2 emissions imposed by legislative bodies require the development of innovative combustion concepts in the transport sector. An evaluation of these new concepts requires an in-depth understanding of the physics of mixture preparation, ignition, combustion and pollutant formation mechanisms. This represents a major challenge from an experimental point of view since non-intrusive, optical measurement techniques are generally required. Furthermore, performing measurements in confined engine environments presents in itself major difficulties : highly turbulent reacting flowfield, high temperature gradients, soot deposits, short timescales…

IFPEN has developed and applied a wide range of optical diagnostic techniques over the last 20 years in order to characterize mixture preparation, combustion and pollutant species in-cylinder. An overview of certain techniques will be given including examples of how the measurement diagnostics contribute to improving our understanding of engine combustion processes to further aid their development.
