Le jeudi 15 décembre à 14h

Jannis Teunissen, who has just finished his PhD at CWI in Amsterdam will give a seminar at LPP on december 15 at 14:00.

Title: Modeling the first nanoseconds of electric discharges
When: Thursday December 15 at 14:00,
Where: Salle de Conférence du CPHT, Bâtiment 6,

Abstract:
An electric discharge occurs when electric charge suddenly starts to flow through an insulator such as air. A well known example is lightning, other examples include fluorescent lamps, spark plugs and the small sparks that sometimes occur when taking of a sweater. Such discharges require a strong electric field, in which electrons can gain enough energy to ionize the background gas.

In my talk I will focus on the modeling of "streamers", which are rapidly growing discharge channels. Two simulation methods will be described in detail: a particle-in-cell code and a fluid approach. In both cases, local grid refinement and an efficient Poisson solver are required to do time-dependent 3D simulations. I will also discuss Afivo, a framework I have developed for quadtree/octree grids that includes a geometric multigrid solver.
