Matthew R Edwards (Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, USA) - Minimally Invasive Measurement of Aerodynamic Properties in Unseeded Flows using Femtosecond Laser Tagging

Abstract :

The measurement of velocity and temperature in experimental gas flows is
important for the design and testing of atmospheric vehicles and the
validation of computational tools. Traditional velocimetry tools (e.g.
PIV, hotwires, and Pitot probes) become less effective in high speed,
reacting, or highly turbulent flows, and have limited ability to provide
high-spatial resolution measurements. We present FLEET (Femtosecond Laser
Electronic Excitation Tagging), an optical method for simultaneous
high-resolution measurement of velocity and temperature in air which
creates a tagged line by dissociating molecular nitrogen. In air and
nitrogen flows, seeding is not required, making FLEET suitable for a wide
range of experimental facilities. We discussthe underlying physical
mechanismsand the results of FLEET measurements under various experimental
conditions.Future applications of FLEET, including flight test vehicles
and understanding the smallest scales of turbulence, are also covered.
