Titre/title : Lightning and Its Exotic Kin in Earth’s Atmosphere

Résumé/Abstract :Despite being a familiar natural phenomenon that can cause great harm to people and property, the physics of lightning is not well understood at present. On the other hand, lightning-like discharges (jets, sprites, etc.) were discovered to also occur above thunderstorms about twenty-five years ago, and active research work has since then been carried out to investigate their physical properties and generation mechanisms. This seminar gives an overview of the lightning research conducted at University of New Hampshire. We study various aspects of lightning and thunderstorms, from lightning initiation and propagation, to thunderstorm energetic radiation, and to their impact in earth’s upper atmosphere. I will discuss the current research projects pursued by our group and present our latest results from optical and radio observations of lightning, jets and sprites, and our modeling efforts to understand their physics.
