Japan-Netherlands : first trip achieved by MMO which has joined MPO before going together towards Mercury

The MMO spacecraft has arrived at ESA-ESTEC (Netherlands) on April 15 2015 (see picture). This spacecraft under responsibility of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is part of the BepiColombo mission to Mercury. It will be launched together with ESA led MPO spacecraft in January 2017. Orbit insertion at Mercury is scheduled in January 2024.

The MMO spacecraft that will circulate on a 400 km x 11800 km orbit (9.3 hour period) is dedicated to analysis of the magnetosphere of Mercury and of the interplanetary medium in the inner heliosphere. The ESA-JAXA Bepi Colombo mission will extend our understanding of planet Mercury and its environment (both neutral and magnetized), building on the results acquired by the MESSENGER mission (NASA) that terminated on April 30 2015 after 4 years of operations. A joint MESSENGER-Bepi Colombo conference is scheduled at DLR in Berlin on June 16-18 2015. LPP participates to the MMO payload within two distinct instruments : (1) DB-SC, the search coil dedicated to measurements of rapid fluctuations of the magnetic field, (2) MSA, the mass spectrometer (visible at right in the picture behind its white thermal shield) dedicated to ion measurements and composition (see dedicated pages to these instruments on our website).
