Interdisciplinary collaboration on wave turbulence

Toutes les versions de cet article : [English] [français]

An interdisciplinary team including Sébastien Galtier (LPP), a researcher in fluid mechanics (Pierre Cortet, FAST) and a mathematician (Laure Saint Raymond, IHES), has obtained funding from the New York-based Simons Foundation to study wave turbulence. This 3-year project (starting in September 2023) is part of a large-scale international collaboration involving a dozen institutions in Europe and the USA, which will be funded of up to 6 million euros.

Wave turbulence occurs when a large number of small-amplitude waves, like waves on the ocean surface, interact. These waves can enter into resonance, slowly producing a cascade phenomenon that carries wave energy to smaller and smaller scales. There are many applications to the study of this phenomenon : the team will be looking in particular at waves in space plasmas, gravitational waves and internal gravity waves in the oceans. This new collaboration will also seek to better understand the surprising proximity recently discovered between rapidly rotating fluids and space plasmas in the solar wind. The aim will also be to pursue the mathematical study of the equations describing this wave turbulence.
