First in-flight tests of the iodine plasma thruster developed by ThrustMe published in Nature

ThrustMe is a spin-off of LPP created in 2017 by Ane Aanesland and Dmytro Rafalsky. In a recent article published in Nature, the first in-flight tests of their iodine plasma thruster are reported. Lui Habl, a PhD student funded by a CIFRE contract with ThrustMe and supervised by Pascal Chabert at LPP is a co-author of the paper. Congratulations to all the ThrustMe team !

The first ideas of using iodine as an alternative propellant to Xenon was proposed in 2006 at LPP to fuel the PEGASES thruster, and patented by Pascal Chabert in 2007. Three PhD thesis in the LPP team (Pascaline Grondein, Florian Marmuse and Romain Lucken) have initiated the first experimental and numerical simulation efforts on very low-pressure iodine plasmas. The detailed physics and chemistry of iodine plasmas are currently being investigated at LPP by two PhD students, Benjamin Esteves and Nicolas Lequette, co-supervised by Cyril Drag, Alejandro Alvarez-Laguna, Anne Bourdon and Pascal Chabert.
