Contribution of LPP to a large review paper on CO2 plasmas

In September 2019, a significant part of the European community working on CO2 plasma kinetics gathered in Erice, Italy, to give lectures at the 63rd Summer School on "Cold plasmas : fundamentals and applications". The fruitful discussions that ensued allowed for the most exhaustive possible synthesis of the current state of the art on the description of CO2 plasmas from both an experimental and modelling point of view. Eight European research groups, including the LPP (represented by Olivier Guaitella from low-temperature plasma group), among the most active in the field, have contributed to this article published in The European Physical Journal D.

The article focuses on the fundamental aspects of these complex molecular gas plasmas rather than on the notions of conversion rates and energy efficiency already described in previous review articles. Here instead the authors have focused on experimental data of basic data and in situ measurements of quantities such as vibrational temperatures or radical densities on the one hand, and on a broad description of the latest modelling advances. The different approaches to refine the electronic kinetics on the one hand and the complete state-to-state models of the vibrations on the other hand, as well as the difficulties to obtain a global description and the intrinsic limitations due to the uncertainties on the basic data are listed and explained.

The result is a substantial paper that will hopefully help the community to progress in its understanding of CO2 plasmas, and more generally in the kinetics of cold plasmas in molecular gases.
