Cold plasma : new hope in the fight against cancer

Thierry Dufour, Lecturer at Sorbonne University/LPP and Laura Fouassier, cell biologist at Inserm/CRSA, have been collaborating for one year to evaluate the therapeutic potential of cold plasmas on solid tumors of cholangiocarcinoma. They are accompanied in their research by Florian Judée (postdoc in plasma physics) and Javier Vaquero (postdoc in biology).

Cholangiocarcinoma - or cancer of the bile ducts - is both a rare and very resistant cancer. Because it can develop without apparent symptoms, this cancer is often diagnosed late, de facto limiting the scope of therapeutic options.

The LPP and the CRSA have innovated and calibrated a cold plasma therapeutic source to evaluate its biological impact in murine models carrying cholangiocarcinoma. With the logistic support of T Ledent (PHEA, CRSA), the LPP and the CRSA have been able to demonstrate how tumors exposed to plasma for a few minutes, can lead to a significant decrease in tumor growth without deleterious effects (no burns, no electrification). In this experimental operating window, we consider that cold plasmas generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) capable of altering the DNA of the cancer cells and then induce their death by apoptosis. In this sense, areas of calcification - signs of already advanced apoptosis - have already been observed in the treated tumor areas.
