The paper, named " Experimental and numerical study of fast gas heating and O atom production in a capillary nanosecond discharge", presented numerous experimental results obtained at LPP by members of the cold plasma team, namely Andrei Klochko, Arthur Salmon, Joseph Lemainque, Jean-Paul Booth and Svetlana Starikovskaia. The results cover the electric current, electric field, energy deposition, gas temperature and oxygen atom density, all measured on a nanosecond time scale. The experimental results have then been compared to the results of two numerical models, each developed by one of the two international teams (Zhongmin Xiong and Mark Kushner, University of Michigan, USA, and Nikolay Popov, Moscow State University, Russia). This collaboration allowed to obtain a global understanding of the mechanism by which almost all the oxygen present in the discharge tube can be dissociated, and the temperature increase by several thousand degrees, as quickly as 2 µs after the initial nanosecond discharge. Broad studies of the kinetics of excited species at particular thermodynamic conditions become possible based on the results obtained in the paper.
