Audrey Chatain, awarded the best presentation price at the first RSPFL
This november, on the 25th-27th, the first Cold Plasmas and Lasers Meeting took place in Toulouse. A hundred of participants gathered around thematic workshops and 30 presentations of young researchers. Alexjandro Alvarez Laguna, Tat Loon Chng, Audrey Chatain and Edmond Baratte valiantly represented the LPP during the 3 days. At the end of the meeting, the price of the best presentation has been awarded to Audrey for her presentation of her studies on the growth of organic aerosols in a N2-CH4 plasma representative of Titan’s ionosphere.
Audrey is a third year PhD student, working in both LPP (under the supervision of Olivier Guaitella) and LATMOS. She tries to understand how form and evolve the orange aerosols that fill in the atmosphere of Titan, the biggest moon of Saturn. The spatial mission Cassini-Huygens revealed that these aerosols form from the nitrogen and methane of the atmosphere of Titan. They are ionized by solar rays and energetic particles which bombard the upper atmosphere. Then, a complex ion chemistry happens, creating molecules always more complex, until the formation of the aerosols. Audrey’s team at LATMOS achieved to mimic the formation of such aerosols in the lab, thanks to a plasma discharge (CCP RF) in nitrogen and methane. Now, all the work to do is to study them in details to understand how they form, and how they interact with the surrounding plasma…
